How Can This Therapy Help Me?

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a major anxiety disorder that can occur after any traumatic event or a series of smaller events, often described by clinicians as big ‘T’ or little ‘t’ traumas.

When the event, or series of events, causes a lot of stress, it can be called a traumatic event. Traumatic events are marked by a sense of horror, fear, helplessness, a serious injury, or the threat of serious injury or even death.

It is important to note that not everyone who experiences a traumatic event or incident will experience PTSD, but many will experience symptoms in the short term, but for most people, their reactions do not last long, even though they can be very distressing during this period of time.

Why Should You Consider Seeking Therapy?

Symptoms usually start to develop immediately after a traumatic event, the symptoms and range of reactions following exposure are wide-ranging and trauma affects different people in different ways, this is sometimes due to previous life events.

Common responses to trauma are upsetting thoughts and images, feelings of emotional numbness, attempting to avoid reminders, and feeling on edge, experiencing feelings of shame, anger, rage (often internalised) or guilt.

People who experience PTSD should be offered a course of trauma focused psychotherapy or psychological therapy, typically this would involve EMDR (eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing) other techniques psychotherapists use can be Mnemodynamics, CBT and Rewind Technique.
