Phobias and fears are perhaps more common than we would like to think. We all of course, at times in our life, experience worry or anxiety to varying degrees, but phobias are our own internal anxieties that have become associated or connected with certain situations, objects or behaviours.

A phobia is a conditioned response, that can get worse over time, so each time we are exposed to the phobia, it can reinforce the phobic experience and therefore the phobia. Covid 19, for many, has increased the phobic threat of danger.

For a great number of people, just the very thought of coming into contact with the phobia or situation that triggers us, can be extremely debilitating and destabilising for us, therefore it can be very difficult to live a normal life. Phobias can often start in childhood, but not always; many adults find their lives severely affected by their phobic symptoms.

There may not appear to be an obvious cause or a rational reason for a phobia, which of course can be very difficult for the individual and the people around them to understand, so it can be difficult for them to pursue the right and appropriate help and support, if they don’t understand it themselves.
